$170 Raised
Raise the Roof for the Blue Barn
Help us raise $25,000 toward a new roof and new gutters before the winter rains.
Every gift is matched through October 7.
The Need
The Blue Barn stands at the center of Herd & Flock Animal Sanctuary in Vacaville. It's home to our pigs Olivia, Luther, Tom, and Diego and to Rico the rooster and his ten hens, and it holds the supplies we rely on to care for every animal here.
Its roof is aging, and NOAA is forecasting a very strong El Niño, with a wetter-than-normal winter anticipated for California. So we're accelerating our plan to replace the roof and install new gutters. In 2024, Brooks Painting of Davis repainted the barn blue through its charity project, and a volunteer neighbor has been donating his time to fix the drainage around the barn and pig yards. The roof is the next piece.
This $25,000 campaign is the first phase of that larger project. Every dollar brings us closer to keeping our animals safe and dry.
Who You'll Help
🐷 Olivia, Luther, Tom & Diego: Olivia escaped a slaughter-bound truck as a piglet and now, at 450 pounds, runs the Blue Barn. Luther, Tom, and Diego are brothers born during Oregon's "250 Pig Rescue." Luther, who is feeling better while healing from a tusk infection, has started challenging Olivia for the top spot again.
🐓 Rico & His Ten Hens: Rico and his mother Zelda were rescued when their owner could no longer care for them. Now he watches over ten hens, and it's not unusual to find one perched on a sleeping pig.
🐂 Finn & Rocky: Finn escaped a dairy farm veal operation as a newborn calf, and Rocky was rescued from a livestock auction. Both are now about 6, an age they were never supposed to reach in the farming system they came from, and they enjoy their own awning on the barn to escape the sun and rain.
🐐 The Goats: Our 14 goats include two families who got to stay together: Meg, Teddy, and their three babies, and Hunny and her daughter Snowflake, a special-needs goat who was set to be euthanized. Both families were rescued from dairy farms. They have their own awning on the barn too.

About Herd & Flock
At Herd & Flock Animal Sanctuary in Vacaville, we rescue farm animals from abuse, neglect, and abandonment, giving them safety, specialized care, and a lifelong home.
Since 2019, we've rescued more than 1,100 animals, including cows, goats, pigs, chickens, pigeons, rabbits, dogs, and cats. Nestled on 60 acres in Solano County (50 of which are a dedicated preserve for local wildlife), we connect our community directly with our residents through guided tours, volunteer opportunities, internships, and educational outreach, including partnerships with the City of Vacaville's Active Aging program and Solano County's workforce and youth transition programs. By meeting our animals face to face, visitors experience their unique personalities, sentience, and capacity for joy, building a more compassionate world for all animals.
