Winged Migration Expo Fund

The winter Pacific Flyway migration brings birds into the North Bay, beginning the end of January. Many of the water fowl and other migrating birds fly over what is referred to as the San Francisco Bay. On their journey they stop, feed and rest on the land and in the waters in the North Bay.

This year’s annual Winged Migration Expo celebrating this migration was held on Mare Island, February 1-2, 2025. It was a tremendous success thanks to the support of generous donors and enthusiastic participants and exhibitors. The event brought together over 1500 birdwatchers, nature lovers, and conservation advocates for a weekend filled with engaging activities, expert presentations, artistic displays, and interactive booths. Highlights included the Live Raptors Presentation, discussions on Burrowing Owls and Monarch Butterfly migrations, self-guided hikes, expert speaker presentations, and tours of Mare Island’s unique overwintering sites and gardens. There were also other guided bird watching hikes off the island in Napa, Solano and Sonoma Counties led by local and regional Audubon Affiliated Groups.

Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to announce that the Winged Migration Expo in 2026 will take place in a larger venue (bldg. 116), again on Mare Island, allowing us to expand our programming and accommodate even more attendees. With your support, we can make next year’s Expo an even more impactful celebration of environmental stewardship and community engagement. We have partnered the Vallejo City Unified School District to include a student environmental art/diorama competition and plan to have a local artist exhibition.  Added to our list of activities this year, will be guided tours of the "Historic Ships" moored on the sea wall at Mare Island. as an extension of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
