A Day in the Life at the Florence Douglas Center

The sun has barely risen when members and participants begin arriving at the Florence Douglas Center in Vallejo.  Walkers, wheelchairs, and canes do not keep members away.  Some bring friends or family members.  Many wear smiles that say “I belong here”.

By mid-morning, the Center is alive with activities.  In one room, music fills the air as seniors stretch and move in a lively wheelchair-friendly fitness class.  Down the hall, seniors are playing cards, laughing, and enjoying the coffee, which is always “on” and complimentary at Florence Douglas Center. 

At lunchtime, the dining area buzzes with energy.  Volunteers serve nourishing meals, often the healthiest—and sometimes the only—hot meal for many who join the lunch.  For some, it’s more than food—it’s connection, dignity, and love.  

In the afternoon, classes and clubs continue.  From technology lessons to help grandparents connect with their families, to support groups that ease loneliness, every corner of the building is filled with purpose.

While they are at the Center, seniors can sign up for travel excursions, shop at the thrift store, play bingo on Wednesdays and Fridays, play cards, learn to play ukuleles, and browse the bulletin boards.  And meet new friends!

By the time the doors close in the evening, hundreds of lives have been touched.  What may look like an ordinary day is, in truth, extraordinary—because it brings joy, health, and community to those who need it most.

In the heart of Vallejo, the Florence Douglas Center is more than just a building—it’s a lifeline.  Everyday seniors find friendship, laughter, support, and opportunities to stay healthy and engaged.  The Florence Douglas Center encourages powerful aging through educational, physical, social, and recreational programs and services for people over 50.
