Sustainable Solano

Sustainable Solano is a grassroots nonprofit working to nurture communities through local food, sustainable landscaping, environmental education, and community resilience. What began in 1999 with a single community garden in Benicia has grown into a countywide movement, engaging residents across the county in hands-on projects that build stronger, healthier neighborhoods.

For $5,000, we can support the foundation of a new garden; offer two hands-on cooking classes with local, seasonal produce; or cover participation stipends for up to eight youth interns. You help us to better serve the community through your gift!

Our main focus areas are Green Infrastructure, Local Food, and Resilience

Our Green Infrastructure program transforms how we relate to land and water by engaging community members in hands-on projects that restore ecosystems and grow food. From community gardens that bring neighbors together, to converting lawns into waterwise permaculture food forests, we’re reimagining urban and suburban spaces as productive, sustainable landscapes. Through workshops and installations, we offer education on growing food, harvesting rainwater, and protecting pollinators - empowering Solano County residents to become stewards of a resilient, regenerative future.

Our Local Food program engages community members in Solano's local food system. Our cooking classes teach people how to create delicious healthy meals using food grown in the county. Our annual Bounty of the County celebration puts local farmers, breweries, wineries, and chef in the spotlight through farm to table dinners. Our goal is to support our local food economy and the people that make it work. 

Our Resilience Program centers environmental justice by addressing the climate challenges facing Solano County communities, particularly air quality and flood risk. We engage residents in collaborative community action plans and internships that explore climate science and civic action. By working alongside local governments, partner organizations, and neighborhoods, we aim ensure that all people in Solano have the knowledge, tools, and voice to shape a just, sustainable future.
